Fallback: my first project for GitHub’s Game Off 2017

Hello everyone,

today I’d like to tell you about a small project I worked on during a very special Game Jam: GitHub’s Game Off 2017.

What is a Game Jam?

For those who might not be familiar with the term, a Game Jam is not just a challenge – it’s also a creative event where programmers, artists, musicians, illustrators, and enthusiasts come together, united by their passion for video games.
In just a few days, participants team up (or go solo) to build a playable prototype around a given theme.

The theme: a return to the past

That year’s theme was “a return to the past.”
Many participants chose to pay tribute to historic milestones of video game culture, recreating or reinterpreting classics.

As for me, still a beginner and entirely self-taught, I wanted to try something different. Being a fan of RPGs, I decided to mix role-playing elements with platform mechanics. The result was Fallback, a small project that combines both genres in a retro and experimental style.

Developing Fallback

Like in most jams, time quickly ran out.
The game remains incomplete and has its limits: missing features, some buggy animations, and resolution issues.

The current version is not responsive, and the recommended resolution is 1024×768.
Still, the core gameplay is there, and for me it was a valuable opportunity to learn.

What’s next

After the Jam, I decided to keep working on Fallback as a way to train with the Unity engine and finish the unfinished levels.
It’s not only a prototype but also a personal learning ground, a small lab for experimenting and improving.

💡 This version:

  • explains clearly what a Game Jam is,
  • highlights the theme and idea in an ordered way,
  • uses subtitles for readability,
  • puts the video and links front and center.
