Three videos went up this week on the Itamde channel, all with a Halloween touch: a forest walk with Cesare, Meïka and Panda, and two Shorts telling the story of La Befana before the legend. Here are my Halloween videos in one place.
A Halloween walk in the forest
The first video takes us into the woods for a Halloween walk, with Cesare, Meïka and Panda.
La Befana before the legend
The other two videos are Shorts, published on 30 October. They form a short film by Itamde Studio that imagines La Befana before she became a legend. We meet a woman who lives apart from the village, knows plants and makes remedies for those who come to her door. The film exists in a French version, “Avant la légende: une histoire oubliée”, and an Italian one, “Prima della leggenda: una storia dimenticata”.
Who is La Befana?
In Italy, La Befana is the old woman who brings gifts and sweets to children on the night of 5 to 6 January, the eve of Epiphany. She is often drawn with a broom and a sack of presents. Stories about her origins vary from region to region, and my short film slips into that gap: it tells what might have come before the legend.
Why a Befana story at Halloween?
I published these Shorts on the eve of Halloween because the two festivals share the same setting: women living at the edge of the woods, plants, doors that people come knocking on. Epiphany is still far away, but folklore can be told all year round.
